I need a faster way to drain the river. I'm thinking a few dozen pumps.

while my carpenters are churning out screw pump components, I've been working on my war room and shoring up defenses. Just in case those carps grow legs and come knocking.

Every single time I have an elvish caravan, there is an ambush at the same place the elves enter the map and the goblins slaughter them. Then I go kill the goblins and take all the elves' stuff. I love it.

That's why I build all wood/meat/bone deathtraps in a special entryway to my fort, for when the elves come a-callin'.

Does it rain a lot at your fort? I think when a river is drained, it acts like a murky pool, and will be partially refilled with rainwater.

Unless you're talking about lots of water. Then I dunno. I've never tried a dam before.

It seems the way it handles rain is every year to just plop 1 depth of water into all of the rivers/lakes that aren't full. I've set up permanent wind-powered pumping stations to remove the water. I have a large underground tank I can use to make flooding kill chambers later.

Also I am building roads to the edges of the map to help the damn retarded caravans make it in. Also I've got a crows nest going up over the entrance to give my archers a chance against these bad guys.

Population is 120 and no sieges so far.

A siege and a megabeast is where they went insane with how difficult the game is? Really? Trying to setup a damn irrigation system is a hell of a lot harder than dealing with a goblin siege (that is: with enough understanding of how the game works, you can make your fort pretty goblin-proof without much trouble).

If anything, put the dorf in there that goes insane because he can't craft something out of glass on a sand-less map (most annoying thing ever, you can't even trade for sand)

Well, I agree there's a certain degree of pants-shitting the first time you set your fort on fire that's greater than those first three hurdles combined.

so I tried irrigating like I had before to make a farm, tunnel from river -> door with lever -> room -> door
the flooding worked ok but now the water doesn't seem to go away, stays at 2 or 3 /7 depth

Postby Warlock » Apr 01 2010 12:41:30 pm

Wow, their site is all kinds of screwed up today.

So how exactly does multiplayer dorf fort even work? Isn't everything pretty much uniquely generated to the user? Seems like it'd be hard to opperate two fortresses at once if they are both using different maps/worlds. Or is it something completely different?

it's something completely different. It all runs on one computer, and people telnet in. Only one can run a fort at once (can have multiple going, though) and everyone can chat.
