So I did a quick skim-over and all I could see was the "Sony fucking sucks!" thread. Here's hoping for a more constructive topic.

Anyway, as of this time yesterday, I'm a PS3 owner. Anyone else besides Arch_Bushmaster?

I've had one since shortly after launch as well.

Games: Resistance

Honestly, I mainly use it for blu-ray movies/DVDs/Cell Linux dev/Media Streaming mostly so far.

However, I do plan to buy a couple more games this weekend. I've just been busy catching up on all the games I bought when I was busy playing WoW. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, I rented that for a couple weeks this summer. Also plan to pick up Motorstorm.

And Heavenly Sword and Singstar whenever they drop . Whenever I have people over playing wii or guitar hero they ask if I have kareoke revolution, figure I might as well get something like it.

I'm also on the fence w/enchanted arms.

My father has one and some baseball game, I suppose I can get a review for it later.

I'm gonna try Resistance via Gamefly. Looks like the one non-turd out of the first-gen lineup. Most eagerly anticipating Uncharted, Folklore and the new Ratchet & Clank. :3

How are the media streaming capabilities? what file formats does it support? what would I have to install on my PC to get it to work?

Just MPG1, MPG2, MP4 (h264). Same as the 360 minus WMV.

How is the online play system for the ps3? Anything comparable to Live?
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.

After a brief evening of toying with a PS3, most of my feelings for the system were reinforced. It's pretty, and while certain things are very slick and stylized, there are other things that detract from it for me. (For instance: If Player 3 presses "Start" and begins a game-- any game-- it will revert control to Player 1 when the game begins. However, this is offset by the ability to hotswitch controller assignments via a pretty simple menu.) Sixaxis is every bit as gimmicky as Wiimote-waggle, without the redeeming qualities (few as they are) of the Wii-mote's ability to act as a lightgun. Without Sixaxis, I could see Warhawks or whatever that game is called being a lot of fun, at least for a time.

More than anything, I think the most important thing I came away with last night was do not, under any circumstances, buy gimmicky third-party controllers for the PS3. Man, those things sucked.

You can't pay a yearly subscription, sadly, but there are friends lists, voice chat and text (not txt!) messaging. No profile pages or gamertags, but many games seem to support matchmaking & leaderboards in their online featuresets.

Have they fixed the fact that their are no unified friends list that carries over to all the games you play online? That's about the only "must have" feature that The Network was missing when I looked into getting a PS3.

Really, online features is about playing with your buddies online. All the bells and whistles are just bonus.

There's a friends list in the XMB, and at least some developers hook in to that to integrate that list into the game in some way, but there isn't now (and I don't foresee) a standard friends list interface that can be retrofitted into already shipped titles.

That's the big difference from a service like Live: PS3 titles will have less consistent online features, but at the same time, developers are allowed more freedom in exactly what online features they do offer. For an example of the latter, Epic plans to make the PS3 version of UT3 able to run all user-created skins/mods/maps, whereas with Gears of War, they complained that Microsoft wanted to charge for subsequent map packs.

The only reasons I haven't purchased the PS3 are the ridiculously high price (no, I don't give a shit about blu-ray), and the complete lack of games. Right now I want to play 1 game on the PS3 and that is Resistance. Once they get more games I want to play, I will be buying one.

I gotta say, the first PS3-exclusive game to blip on my radar and make me wish I owned one is Haze. If that game is anywhere near as interesting as it looks, it will be a must-own game for the console.

Uh oh, November: Gamer's Hell Edition is hitting the PS3 this week. This makes for a tasty release list, if not necessarily all PS3-exclusives:
All o' dat, and Haze hits next week.

The top 3 of your "to-want" list are all mighty-fine. Folklore might be iffy if you don't like dungeon crawling and comic-book-panel style narrative, but I do. :3

A copy came in via Gamefly to me, but I'm working on my master's thesis this week, so I loaned it to a friend who just picked up their own PS3. I can probably report back here sometime in the next week if he doesn't post his opinion directly.

I really want to buy this game. The reviews are really good on it but then again reviews by any of those "major" game websites its not something I rely on.

It's a single-player game with limited replayability (aren't they all?). If the videos, hooks and game mechanics seem worth $60 for you, buy it now. Otherwise, wait for a used copy or a "greatest hits" re-release. :)

I should be getting my GF copy back sometime in the next 24-48 hours, so that's the best I can say at this point.

I bought a PS3 the other day. I'd say the biggest dislike of mine is the fact that your PS3 network stuff isn't accessible without quitting games. All you can do inside games is invite friends to your party (at least that I've seen). It could just be COD4, too.

PS. COD4 is awesome.

Sony's promising in-game XMB in 2008, but given the number of delays associated with this console and its titles, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have a couple of questions. My parents are in the market for a new DVD player, and I'd like to ask some basic (very basic) questions for those who know for sure.

1. I can pick up a wirless internet signal with my wii when I bring it home, would they be able to with their ps3 (do all/cheaper models have wifi out of the box)?
2. Can you plug in a keyboard attachment at all for use with internet or typing email?
3. Is the standard DVD player better than the ps2's? i.e. Has anyone had any issues with playing standard dvd's?

The PS3 has wifi built in. It's actually an easier setup than on PCs, if you ask me. Yes, you can add a mouse and keyboard, and many reviews say the BluRay player is better in the PS3 than most standalones.

Would it be out of line to ask why you're going to tell them to spend $400 + tax on a DVD player? You can buy nice upconverting players for $100.

Because a PS3 is less likely to be obsolete in 5-10 years, and a nice upconverting DVD player doesn't browse the internet in a house without a PC that gets an unlocked wifi signal. Plus there are some deals out there where you can get discounted PS3's (In the past month I've seen free ps3 with purchase of Sony LCD TV, 10% off a Sony product, 20% off a Sony product and $100 off your first purchase on a Sony Credit card). Some of these have since expired, but with a little patience and searching I'm betting I can get them a new PS3 under $350 easy.

I'm just giving them options, wanted to make sure of the abilities before they decide.

1. yes, all models have wifi now
2. yes, a USB keyboard works great... a bluetooth keyboard/mouse is even nicer... sit on the couch and type across the room (only really useful with a large TV)
3. the standard DVD player is great.

If it's as or more user friendly/compatible than the Wii's browser, it'll likely work for their applications. Really all she wants it for is to look stuff up every so often and email. I think my dad would use it to play free online poker if that's possible, but that's a BIG if. He doesn't care for anything "complicated", which includes using a computer... or muliple input devices to a single TV. My mom is willing to learn. Thanks to all who've helped.

hell, there's a $10 PSN downloadable online poker game that would probably be better than the web browser...

That's indeed worth the money for casual online poker. Throw in a bluetooth headset and you just may lose your father. :)

Picked up two DualShock3's and eagerly anticipating 2.30's release tomorrow, almost as much as getting the "new" RockBand DLC on Thursday. Who's with me?

My PS3 has quickly gone from video game machine to blu-ray player solamente.

I'm waiting for MGS4

This brings up a good point - which console do I buy it for. I was planning on buying it for the xbox360 because of the d/lable content.

The GTA4 DLC is an Xbox360 exclusive.

Paid $55 apiece via Amazon's pre-release pricing. Don't regret it, 'cuz $10 is worth not paying Wal-Mart.

Once again, if anyone wants to sell their bluetooth six-axis controller because they've got rumblers now, PM me.

This is when I think I will buy mine, if I decide owning a PS3 and 360 is worth it. Probably pick up the bundle.

Speaking of, has anyone had issues of their PS3 freezing up occasionally? Mine's a refurb, but luckily I got the 1-year Gamestop warranty. I'm waiting for the Ames' store to call me back to find a replacement, since they don't make the 60g anymore.

i have a 60g and have had that happen a few times, but not regularly enough that its worried me. the main culprit was assassin's creed, and that was more due to buggy programming than any hardware issue
