well, i just spent an hour alone in a tornado shelter at work. i don't recommend it, especially if you find out on your cell phone that a tornado was spotted over saylorville lake and headed in your general direction.

Stupid weather rerouted my flight to Milwaukee where it was then canceled and I was put up in a hotel for the night by the airport.

Nothing actually touched down in the greater Des Moines area did it? All I saw were reports of low hanging clouds.

Either way, I had one of the "it's comin' right for us" moments when they said they spotted one over Waukee.

yeah, that was the other one that i noticed was supposedly heading towards me. i don't think there's any confirmed reports of touchdowns (kind of like an ISU game HAW HAW HAW) but funnel clouds were spotted by at least a few people.

it's kind of freaky to be in a shelter by yourself wondering if anybody will remember you're there if the tornado does hit. such is the joy of having the entire building to myself and working with little to no supervision.

The DOT is getting ready to close Interstate 80 from I380 to Iowa 38 (Exit 267) in cedar county

detour will be I80->I380->H30->Iowa 38->I80

Cedar Falls is has water up to 12 st and 18th is closed, or so I hear. In '93 it only got to 6th. (The river is on 1st) In '93 there also was no Dike. This is flooding worse WITH the big-ass dike. Supposedly '93 was our hundred year flood.

No doubt. IIRC, the city paid a ridiculous amount of money for this tree as the symbol for the City of Five Seasons. They then proceeded to sell out the naming rights of the Five Seasons Center to U.S. Cellular.

we are the contracted architects for CFU, and we were working on a renovation and addition pre flood. that project just got changed to an entire renovation! we have a company from Chicago in route at the moment that will dot he CFU. supposedly in 2 weeks they will be in and out. Cleaning it completely, taking off the sheetrock and anything they need to do to get it to the point of new construction. our phones have been ringing like crazy all morning with people needing things. the next 6 months+ are going to suck for sure but at least not as bad as in cedar rapids.

my current residence is at the very top of the third picture, just a little right of center. I am kinda curious to know what the elevation of my ground floor is compared to the top of the levee. I might have been closer to getting wet than I thought.

On that MapMyRun site (and just about any route site) there are elevation options. That one in particular you can see the little arrows that say "hide elevation." When it's hidden it's replaced with "show elevation."

well, the elevation data that thing gives doesn't seem to be worth a damn.... when I do it, it says there's 80 feet of elevation change between here and the railroad tracks by the Ice House, and I know it's far less than that. I also plotted a route along the street in front of my house, and it said there was 9' of elevation change in about 40 feet... and the street is close to level.

Fort Madison under water. The picture was taken on Saturday. Only some small sections of the city are low enough to flood, but I guess there are quite a few cities on the other side of the river completely under water. This area of the Mississippi isn't supposed to crest until Wednesday so there could still be a bit more flooding left.

this is why you do not drive on flood roads. this is Hwy 1 south of Mt Vernon that was under flood waters for a few days. i cant imagine the surprise of someone as soon as their car would have hit the first chunk of concrete.

That looks like its just north of the bridge going over the Cedar River. Damn.

From what I've seen so far, this has got to be worse that '93.

Dude, it's like 20 feet over '93. Cedar Falls didn't even HAVE a dike in 93 and it flooded worse this time.

Actually I agree with him. I drive from Ames to WDSM every day.

Stop gawking and freakin move!! I hate stop-n-go traffic simply because people want to see the stupid flood waters.

Totally - its exactly 50 miles from my apt to the parking garage at work. But since Derek still goes to ISU, one of us is going to have to make the commute, and Derek did it for 2 years while I finished my degree.

We're just burning down the days now....after he graduates this fall we're likely to move out of state. And if we don't, next year we're moving at least to the same city we work in!!

you'd have to have a real city with a real bridge first.

Yeah - real bridge indeed :leery:

Outside of the twin cities you have nothing but mine country and want to be canadians.... Such a great place to live, that you don't anymore, do you?
