My parents and everyone else called me by my middle name until 7th grade, and I hated it because it's a boys name and it caused confusion at sleep away camp registration on more than one occasion. Then in 7th grade my teachers started calling me by my first name and I never corrected them, so it stuck. Now only my family and my dentist call me by my middle name, and that's fine with me.

You can't just name someone Optimus Prime. You have to earn that name.

Orion Pax, on the other hand, is just fine.

I hated my name until about junior year of highschool. It wasn't feminine enough, especially since it was just "Blair" and not "Blaire." It's an androgynous name, and I've met a couple guys named Blair. But I've only met 2 other women named Blair (total of 4 other Blairs in my life, besides me), and now I love it. Its pretty unique.

Don't be afraid to pick a rarer name, as long as its not stupid. Even if they don't like it at first, they'll grow into it.

I always thought the word "justin" was a little sloppy off the tongue. It's kindof an awkward vowel transition after the hard "ssst" sound. Most of the time when I say it, it either sounds more like I said "jostin", I don't sound out the second syllable enough making it sound like "just'n", or if I enunciate it carefully enough it sounds like "just in".

Everybody ends up forgetting that my name was Justin anyway and always remembers me as Jason. Usually even after I correct them a bunch of times on it.

I'd be satisfied with a simple, common, one-syllable name. Mike, Dave, Jake, Scott, etc are all fine with me. Oh, but something near the top of the alphabet. Supposedly that helps your chances for success in life.

I had the 6th most common name for my year. I've always liked it although it was a little confusing when I lived with someone with the same name for 3 years after college.

I agree with most just don't choose a made up word or crazy spelling just to be different. Pick something sensible.

yes. i don't like being called jim. i hate when people just call me jim. it doesn't bother me as much if they ask if i'd like to be called jim.

i think there are some people that do like names that can be shortened and would prefer to be called jim instead of james, which i guess is a nice option.

my uncle james is referred to as james from family, and for anyone else he is referred to as jim.

It's usually not too hard to figure it all out in context. Only recently has it ever been a problem and that's just because there are two other Mike's that do oly lifting with me. Even then it's not hard to figure out with the use of nicknames and context.

I think there's a tipping point. If two Adrians are in a room together they probably aren't used to hearing their names when not referencing themselves. There are so many Mikes that I learned rather quickly that not every conversation revolves around me.

Re: How do you feel about your name?

Postby grandpoohbah19 » Sep 27 2008 11:39:20 am

I'm not a huge fan of my name. I have a girls name and I'm not a girl... ok, well it's not always a girls name, it can be both but it's more commonly used for girls. I used to (and sometimes still do) get mail for seventeen magazine, and Ms. Teen Iowa contests. I recently went to get a prescription filled and the pharmacists kept referring to me using female pronouns (has she taken ____ before?). It also happens whenever I call anywhere, I'll verify my self and then they'll ask who they're speaking with, assuming I'm not the account holder because I'm a guy.

My middle name is ok for a much older person (Lloyd). I've considered going by my middle name, or using the first initial of my first name and then my middle name, or just my first and middle name initials.

My grandpa has a similar issue, he has a mans name, but its spelled like a girls name. He always get woman mail as well. We used to joke that when i turned 18 we'd go to the court house and change our names to something tough like Brutus or John Wayne.

You should name your daughter Teagan. It's unique yet acceptable enough. Sure it's a name shared by a porn star, but it's a great name.

Second on the Erin. What fucking twat would spell his kid's name like a girl? Unfortunately, enough that some dumb bitch at Pizza Hut puts it on the order, which is printed on the side of the box. And that's after I give my credit card number to them, which prints out a fucking receipt with the correct and only real male spelling of the name.

On the other hand, it's not boring. And girls seem to like it for some reason.

I don't get called by my first name often, being in the Army. Sometimes its been weird when I'm sleeping with a girl and she calls out my name. It's also weird when officers I work with start calling me that when there aren't other NCOs around (officers call each other by first names for some reason, and I tend to work with officers and usually at their level).

Come to think of it, have any of you ever heard your name and thought:

"My name sounds weird to me sometimes."

It's happened to me, first or last. It's just weird to hear your own name coming out of someone else's mouth I guess. Like copyright infringement, only nicer.

grandpoohbah19 wrote:I'm not a huge fan of my name.

What's your name, Kelsey?
Teagan reminds me of that horrible song from about a year or two ago.

Nah that's fine. You had to make something up. There's no standard diminutive variation of my name that assholes can use when they want to pretend to be my friend. And I like it that way.

My name is plain. My name is biblical. My name is extremely common. But I like it anyways.

Living in DC, I've come across a bunch of...uh...interesting names. I've seen brothers named Million and Billion (apparently pronounced Mill-YON and Bill-YON). There is a woman with ten kids, and each name has an apostrophe.

I was just trying to recall, and I don't think I know anyone with a "Mike" or "Michael" at all, IRL. Huh.

I like my name, Duffy, but I wouldn't recommend naming a kid that at all. Too many things rhyme with it and it isn't very manly with the -y at the end. It is fun to sign things with just my first name though, and not having a problem with confusion because another person shares my name.

I've been called everything that can rhyme with Duffy, which is a lot, as well as things like Ducky, Dusty, etc. when people don't hear me very well. The most common question I get asked is if it is my real name which can get a little annoying.

It seems a lot of people share your assumption. I also have a last name, McColloch, that is apparently impossible to pronounce correctly, at least how my family pronounces it, even after I correct the person. Not a single person I've met has pronounced it correctly the first time, and there are plenty of people that still pronounce it wrong after knowing me for a long time. Our family pronounces it "Mic-uh-luh". So I have 2 names that I have to explain whenever I meet someone, though it makes for a good introduction icebreaker I guess.
