The date went well. We had dinner at a south Indian restaurant, then went over to the cafe.

The cafe was really crowded, so we ended up standing most of the time. Some dude was selling weed at the next table, which was mildly entertaining. She had the Sunday puzzle section with her, so we did a bunch of those puzzles later in the evening while we listened to the music. A couple string quartets played and a brass quintet played a few numbers at the end of the night.

It was great to meet someone as dorky as me. There's a board game group that gets together every other Sunday. I'm going to ask if she wants to go to that. Also, not a SIF. She's certainly no pole vault girl, but I wouldn't call her fat.

I also got a response from some other woman I messaged on OkCupid, so we'll see where that goes.

I think you just answered your own question.

I used to know this girl who sent me mixtape after mixtape - with drawings and glitter and stuff on them. She poured her soul into each and every one. I listened to maybe half of one once. Mixtapes (CD's to a lesser extent) are seen as a way to send coded messages. Maybe I'm the only one who sees it that way, but it seems to me to be more than just a way to share music you like.

I guess the real reason I wasn't interested was because I didn't ask for them. To me, it seems like some kind of subtle implication that you have better/more varied musical taste if you start giving someone unsolicited mix CDs.

If they ask for them, though, go for it.

I too have the mixtapes with drawings on them. Except my girlfriend at the time drew penises and stuff all over them. And I never actually listened to any of them; it was all music they 'thought' I liked, or songs from bands I liked, except I didn't like the music, and God knows how they did it but they'd always manage to pick the few songs from my favorite band that I actually hated, to include on there too.

Do you burn DVDs of your favorite TV shows and movies and give them to your interests? Because that's the difference. No one minds having music suggested to them.

I lend my DVDs out. If it were easier, I'd burn copies for people. I don't see what the fuss is. If burning a CD for someone is saying "my musical tastes are better than yours", then how isn't suggesting music? It's not as though she's rummaging through your CD collection and throwing them away. She's just suggesting that you listen to this stuff, and going the extra helpful mile of giving you a copy of it.

Because if she makes a suggestion and I don't follow it, there's little-to-no guilt trip associated with it. If she makes a CD and I don't listen to it, there's a fairly substantial guilt trip of 'I went to all the trouble to make this for you and you won't even listen to it?!'
