computer is freezing up all the time

If an EMP would break it, talk about it here.

computer is freezing up all the time

I have an old ass Dell latitude D800 piece of shit but it's what I have to use while I'm in Michigan and my wife is still back in Iowa with her computer. I'm running XP on it, and lately it has started going into a solid freeze every time it's on, usually after 20-60 min. When this happens everything freezes up and it becomes completely unresponsive. The only thing I've done lately is removed a bunch of old files from the desktop (to trash bin), but they weren't anything important. So wtf is this? I can't say much more otherwise this shitbox is going to freeze up again. It already froze up once in typing this.

Possibly over heating? Maybe a fan died in it. Also about 1000 other reasons too.

I considered overheating, but I can still hear the fan running, and it isn't very hot. Oh well, fuck it. I'm just getting a new laptop. Either a netbook or a Macbook...only about a $1000 difference in price.

Bad memory? Hard drive going out? If you have the time and the desire, run memtest on it and see if it is the memory.

If it is the hard drive, dump the computer. It's an IDE hard drive, which are getting to be expensive per GB.

Just to be sure, I did some scans on it and didn't find any malware. I've noticed that if I start it up for the first time of the day, it can go about 2 hours before it locks up, of course that was with me doing nothing on but just letting it runa scan.

I guess it's a moot point now since I got a mac book air, but I'd at least like to know that there aren't any cooties that I'll give the mac book in transferring data from this lap top.
