.. I joined Strangetalk.

Also, on my recent annual trip to Ames, it appeared that campustown has more hair & beauty places than bars or other businesses I would enjoy.

Nope. For a time, I really questioned whether changing was a good idea. I didn't want to go to grad school, and I wanted to get out of college as fast as possible. Psychology seemed interesting and doable, and I finished in 3.5 years. In my last year, I decided that grad school would be OK and ended up in a master's program. After that, I interned in a school and earned my school psychologist certificate. I did the job for 2 years and didn't like it very well at all. It wasn't the psychology part of it -- it was more of a function of where special education is moving and what the field expects out of the psychologist. It's a pretty terrible time to be entering the discipline, at least in my state, and I didn't like it.

Lucky for me, the administration in one of my schools asked me to join them in the central office, and now I have the best job possible. I manage all of the data coming in and going out of the district, which is a lot. My other primary responsibilities are coordinating all assessment (K-12) and managing the department of technology. It's busy.

The greatest thing about having 2 degrees in psychology is that the approaches to assessment, statistics, and behavioral research have implications and applications everywhere. Working in a school is a great setting because we have so many students, so much data, and such an important job. Without my background in psychology, I would neither understand nor be able to study any of the things we do. In truth, I'm the only one there who can operationalize and answer some of our hard questions. That's why they brought me in to the administrative team.

Without majoring in psychology, I don't think I would have ever discovered my love for statistics. Pure theoretical mathematics is pretty awesome, but applied statistics is where it's at. I love real data, I love large statistical models, and I love making behavioral predictions. Sure, I miss calculus a little bit, and proofs are pretty fun, but I wouldn't trade in linear regression for anything on the theoretical side.

To an outsider, it might seem ridiculous that I went school for about 7 years to do a job for 2 years and move on to something else, but I really don't see it that way. All of that experience brought me to where I am today, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Were you that guy they had an article in the Ames Tribune about over the summer? Not to stalk you or anything.. I'm just seeing data points that match up with something I read, vaguely....

Me? I SHOULD have earned at least one or two masters by now for free.. But I'm lazy. Looking back, it was probably a waste of an opportunity.

10 years ago in Ames I failed driver's ed for not stopping and looking both ways before I hit the railroad tracks by the high school. I pointed out that it wasn't required by law. She reminded me of this 80s video we watched about railroad crossing malfunctions. I told her that the video was irrelevant to my point and her job. She drew out a big F on my driving evaluation paper, then circled and underlined it. And I remember working a few hours a week in the math help room (first floor carver) that year. Some ditzy blonde girl would come in every morning for Calc III help. She could only provide correct outputs with the help of the most convoluted and senseless analogies.

Insurance companies think that being older makes you a safer driver. Maybe she flunked him for being too young.

Most of this year's freshman class was born after the first Jurassic Park was released in theaters. What do you think they'll be sharing that you'd find interesting?
