my system still has enough room for hinterlands and more.

I know that solutions exist. I've just been too lazy to implement anything to-date.

Just heard about a new-to-me promo card this morning: Walled Village.

Seems underpowered in a post-Hinterlands world, especially at 4 cost. Still ordered my own copy.

There's yet another dominion promo card out there called governor or some such. It's not on the geek store yet. I think it was an essen promo or something.

I picked up both Quarriors and the new Mage Knight board game with Amazon gift balances.

Quarriors = Dominion with dice instead of cards
Mage Knight (2011) = cards&miniatures roleplaying fantasy adventures, kinda like Vlaada Chvátil (of Dungeon Lords & Galaxy Trucker fame) wanted to take a stab at crossing Arkham Horror with MtG

I really like how combat/exploration/magic is simulated as I'm reading the rules, but we'll see if I can get through enough of the systems' explanation to actually play a game with anyone else. Push come to shove, I think I'll really enjoy solo play. :bigpacaweseome:

Recent buys:
Mr. Jack: quick 2 player game, kind of guess who-ish but does require some strategy

For xmas acquired
Mille Bornes: Fun game I played a bunch as a kid, card game attack/response, very basic rules
7 Wonders w/leaders expansion: civilization building card game
Ticket To Ride and 1910 expansion: train route building board game
Talisman 4th Edition: PVP board game, not exactly the most balanced, but fun.

I picked up a copy of Munchkin Deluxe and Cthulu Munchkin.

Deluxe version comes with a board and pawns to track levels and gender cards, which is pretty convenient, otherwise it's just vanilla Munchkin.

Haven't played the Cthulu version yet.

Was hoping to play it over lunch, but seems to go longer than an hour. Anyone have any good suggestions for games that are mostly under an hour. Our usuals are Bang!, Citadels and Back to the Future.

FINALLY went to Fantasy Flight games headquarters. A few observations: 1) No outside food or drink is allowed 2) bottles of soda consequently cost $2.25 3) they are having a Game of Thrones weekend on May 18th and last year George RR Martin came.

Anyway, I was staring at all of the Game of Thrones games for so long that someone approached me and said he'd teach me the card game if I was that interested. I played the Baratheon deck against the Stark deck. He had a lot of expansions, so there were some more rules. I had a good time, though of course I didn't understand all of the actions to the fullest as a n00b. Decided to buy it and will play tonight.

I don't have a lot of card playing experience, having skipped out on Magic and all of that stuff, but the dude said it's like Magic on steriods. I'll probably buy some expansions after I get it going. Would love to have a Dorne deck and play the Red Viper as my knight for awhile. Would also love to play Lannister deck, only to have the Mountain and the hound kick everyone's asses. With the Baratheon deck, I played Knight of the Flowers for a long, long time.

There's always a bunch of people playing GoT there on Saturday nights. This worries me more than it excites me. :P

I am having such a mental debate. On one hand, going to KC the weekend of May 18th to take care of the house makes a helluva lot of sense b/c the rest of our summer is basically getting booked. On the other hand, staying up here for GoT and some art fair stuff is drastically more exciting. So anways, if you come up, let us know and we might stay in town to play. Do you own this game?

Played some Chrononauts and Back to the Future lately. Both based on the same style of flipping lynch pin events. One in the real universe, the other about Hill valley. I like some of the key ideas from the core game better than BTTF, but the BTTF game does feel slightly more polished.

Sometime in the next couple weeks, I'm going to (hopefully) get back in the swing of playing Wealth of Nations. I introduced a co-worker to it three months back and have been itching to try out other strategies. Deterministic economies with debt, trade and development are fascinating.

Ninety minutes until I roll into more Wealth of Nations goodness. Will be setting up a 4-player table with 3 not-quite-n00bs (including myself) and a first-timer.

4 player is definitely a more active, needy table. Nobody ended the game without some level of debt.

The one first-timer ended up winning with a capital->3bank->food->power build out. He made a mistake in round one (that we argued against letting him mulligan) that shifted the power tremendously in his favor. Leaving his factories unpowered made capital scarce, which made him the go-to trading partner pretty much every round. Final scores had him in the upper eighties for victory points, second place in the fifties, with the two indebted/unproductive players in the low twenties.

Being able to counter an early trade leader is going to take some more strategic analysis. :bigdocawesome:

It seems to me like odd-player games have significantly different incentives than even-player games, since trades are always between pairs of players and are guaranteed to be mutually beneficial.

Don't you agree?

How many times have you played it?

You must have gotten lucky.

It is very random in terms of play length. Games can either be over almost immediately if someone gets a good keeper draw, or take hours if people have a chance to dig in.

I think I was only partly describing the not-fun part.

The random length is a symptom of the bigger problem; that the game is very random.

How do you win? Playing well? Having great strategy? Nope. You get dealt a lucky hand at the beginning of the game or get a random lucky draw late in the game.

In the end it just boils down to a very long drawn-out die roll for who wins.

I think this is true for a group of people who understand the rules and all the cards interacting under those rules. Less true for someone who hasn't seen all the cards or really internalized the ruleset.

I'd agree to that.

I'm not saying it's kryptonite.

A few plays ought to give your average gamer their fill. You can try fluxx variants too, especially if you like the theme. It just doesn't have much staying-power.

I have had that one one my wish list for a while. It was recommended as a good game for my 5 year old. But seeing it on Table Top sealed the deal and I am going to pick it up for his birthday in a couple weeks.

It looks like they're going with the "living card game" style (think Dominion) rather than CCG this time.

Being an older crotchety gamer with no remaining patience, I like that.

Oh you've played a card? Please wait 24 hours while we allow your opponent to cast an instant. Should they opt to do so, you will have an additional 24 hours to play one instant. Should you desire to play additional instants, you must wait until all current actions have resolved. See you next month!

I played Roll Through the Ages for the first time last night. It's a pretty simple straight forward game with 7 dice, note pad and a peg board for each player. It reminded me of a faster simpler version of stone age.

Re: What's playing at your table?

Mostly been playing The aMAZEing Labyrinth and Forbidden Island with my son.
We have probably played Marvel Heroes Unite every day for the last two weeks.

So glad that the Candy Land, etc. games are coming to a close.

Oh wow, GenCon was amazing. So much better than PAX for a table gamer! I strongly recommend it to regular readers of this thread.

Android Netrunner's breakaway success was stunning but deserved. That game makes me tingle in cyberpunk places.

Also, you gotta check out Consequential. It's a faster-playing Arkham Horror with the 16-game campaign approach of Risk Legacies.

Only game I ended up buying for myself from the con (after backing SolForge & Consequential, of course) was Cover Your A$$ets, a light-but-clever card game for 3-5 players. The demo from the game creator was quick-to-learn and replayably fun.

Race is definitely a learn-the-deck sort of game. I lost many many games before I was on the same plane as the rest of my playgroup who's got double-digits more games of it under they belts.

Visited some friends last weekend and did a board game night. Played quite a few new ones.

Kingsburg - Worker placement game that was pretty fun, get resources and build stuff to get the most victory points, but also need some defense from the yearly attack.

Smily Face - Weird art that seems deceptively family friendly. I suppose it still is a good family game, but there is a lot of backstabbing and screwing people.

Munchkins - Played it, but we got some new expansion that had bards. A natural progression in the screw your friends type of game.

King of Tokyo - The last and probably my favorite new game of the night. From the creator of Magic too. You're all a Tokyo type monster and you need to get 20 victory points or be the last monster standing. You get to roll a lot of dice, kind of like Yahtzee, but there are also special ability cards you can buy that make the game much more dynamic.
